Hotel Imagine Kyoto
We were drawn to this contemporary ryokan for how deliberately it reworks tradition: a sink...
Hotel Vischio Kyoto by GRANVIA opened in May 2019 as a second, separate property from the flagship Hotel Granvia Kyoto, the large hotel built directly into Kyoto Station itself, both operated by JR West's hotel division. It closed briefly for a deep clean and reopened in July 2023. The name comes from vischio, Italian for mistletoe, chosen by JR West as a symbol of happiness and safety, and the hotel built its identity around three stated values, Wellness, Innovation, and Locality, summarized in-house as a simple promise of Bed, Bath, and Breakfast done properly rather than as an afterthought to a station stopover.
We included this hotel because it backs up a simple promise with a real result: its breakfast has won the Jalan Award for Best Breakfast among large hotels in the Kansai and Hokuriku region two years running. That same attention shows up elsewhere, in a free fitness room at a price point where most hotels charge for one, and in guest ratings that stay consistently high across multiple booking platforms rather than clustering around a single inflated score. It is the rare case of a station-adjacent hotel competing on comfort and service rather than on location alone, and it shows in details as small as the independent washbasin fitted into every room.
The hotel sits two minutes on foot from Kyoto Station's Hachijo, or south, exit, close enough that the shinkansen platforms are reachable from the lobby in under five minutes, which makes it a practical base for day trips across the Kansai region as much as for exploring Kyoto itself. Aeon Mall Kyoto is a five-minute walk for guests who want shopping or a casual meal without heading into the city center. Being on the quieter south side of the station also means a calmer walk in from the shinkansen than hotels clustered on the station's busier north side, where most of the tour buses and crowds gather.

The 423 rooms split across seven layouts, from 21.5 to 43.6 square meters, covering Moderate Twins and Doubles, a Ladies floor with upgraded toiletries and nano-ionic hair dryers, Triples, and Superior Twins. Among them are family rooms built around four single beds, a configuration still uncommon in Japanese hotels, where family accommodation more often means a single larger bed shared by several guests rather than individual beds for each person. Every room, regardless of category, has an independent washbasin and toilet rather than a combined unit, a small but practical distinction for travelers used to the compact, all-in-one bathrooms common in Japanese city hotels.
The hotel's large public bath is split by gender, with a dry sauna and a cold-water bath on the men's side and a mist sauna on the women's. A fitness room, open to guests 15 and older, is free to use, a detail reviewers single out as unusual at this price point. Breakfast at Vischio Garden runs from 6:30 to 11:00 in the morning, with close to a hundred Japanese and Western dishes overseen by the hotel group's executive chef, which is what has carried the Jalan Award two years in a row. The restaurant also serves dinner for guests who would rather not leave the building after a long day on the trains, and a guest lounge with complimentary coffee and tea, plus a coin laundry, round out the practical side of a stay built for travelers passing through as much as settling in.
