Onpoint Madarao
We loved the way Onpoint Madarao treats a ski trip as only half the story....
La Vista Kusatsu Hills opened in 2021 on a hillside above Kusatsu Onsen, one of Japan's three great hot-spring towns, and built its case around water rather than architecture alone: the hotel draws from three separate springs, Yubatake, Bandai-Ko and Yukawa, and was the first in Kusatsu to put a bathhouse on its top floor with a panoramic view over the town and the hills beyond. The European-resort exterior is a deliberate counterpoint to the ryokan norm nearby, and it works because the bathing culture underneath stays entirely local, water drawn straight from the springs rather than piped in from a shared municipal source.
We chose this hotel because it treats Kusatsu's famous water as the whole point rather than a footnote. Three source springs, a top-floor panoramic bathhouse, four reservable private outdoor baths and hinoki cypress tubs built into every room add up to more bathing variety than most properties in the town offer across their entire footprint. The playful detail of a free beer or ice cream waiting in the lounge after a soak keeps the whole experience from feeling too solemn about its own onsen credentials, a small gesture that says the hotel does not take itself quite as seriously as its bathing facilities might suggest.
Kusatsu Onsen's hillside setting puts the hotel above the town's famous Yubatake hot-water field while a free shuttle from the Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal keeps the walk optional rather than mandatory. The elevation is what makes the top-floor bathhouse's panoramic view possible, and it places the hotel close enough to Kusatsu's shopping streets and other bathhouses for guests who want to sample the town beyond their own hotel.
Prix: €€€
Vibe: European-resort exterior, playful fairy-tale rooms, serious about its water
Chambres: 54, in three types themed after Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and Snow White
Best For: couples wanting Kusatsu's springs with a private bath in the room
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the top-floor panoramic bathhouse, the first of its kind in Kusatsu
Dining: restaurant serving seasonal local ingredients under stained glass, overlooking a pond
Amenities: private hinoki cypress open-air baths in every room, four reservable private outdoor baths, sauna, esthetic salon
Attractions: the Yubatake hot-water field, Kusatsu Onsen's shopping streets, the wider onsen town on foot or by shuttle
The Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel and Snow White room types are a lighter touch than most onsen hotels attempt, but each still delivers the same core promise: a private hinoki cypress open-air bath drawing on the hotel's own spring water. The European-inspired build extends the theme into the public spaces without tipping into pastiche, and it gives the hotel a distinct identity against Kusatsu's many timber-and-tatami ryokans, aimed squarely at guests who want a hot-spring stay without the more austere ryokan formalities that can come with it.
Beyond the in-room tubs, the top-floor bathhouse offers indoor, outdoor and barrel-bath options with a view over the town, and four separate private outdoor baths can be reserved for guests wanting mountain or town vistas without company. Drawing on three named springs rather than one gives the water itself a rotating character across the hotel's different baths, a detail serious onsen travelers will notice even if casual guests do not.
The playful room themes and European exterior mark a real departure from Kusatsu's traditional ryokan look, so travelers set on a strictly Japanese aesthetic should know what they are booking. The hillside position also means a short shuttle or walk to reach the Yubatake and the town center, a minor trade-off for the panoramic bathhouse view the elevation makes possible.
